In my experience, the most successful covers lean towards visual attractiveness rather than scientific detail.
The main goal of the artwork should be to capture interest through visual appeal while appreciating the science of the work.
The cover differs from a graphical abstract, figure, or flow chart, which aim to aid scientific understanding.
Think about the cover as an artwork you would frame on your wall that depicts the essence of your work.
